Research

The Chair of Early Modern History at Bayreuth University combines political, cultural, social and economic history. It aims to take a holistic view of historical change. We study national specificities in a comparative perspective as much as trans- and supranational historical phenomena, the so-called entangled histories.

Research areas

  • Early Modern European and Atlantic History with focus on migrations, confessional and religious history, religious minorities and diasporas
  • Media and Press History (18th to 20th centuries)
  • French Revolution, Atlantic Revolutions
  • Social and cultural history of the Enlightenment
  • History of cartography as history of knowledge
  • Economic history as cultural history
  • Historical theory and philosophy of history

Research questions:

  • Transfer of cultures and systems, Transformations of systems
  • Construction of identity and its effects: nation, ethnicity, diaspora, construction of space/areas
  • Constructivity, "Emergence" and transmittance of knowledge
